Little bay primary & Infant school

We grow what we eat, and eat what we grow. As a rural community, we do not always have access to a wide variety of supplies or funding from the Government to run the canteen to feed the school children. As a result, we try to be as self-sufficient as possible, which is why we built our own chicken coop and started raising our own chickens.

However, we still have to purchase and feed the chicks for 6 weeks before we can harvest them to supply the canteen. Our goal is to purchase and raise enough chickens so that we can not only feed the children. but also sell some of the chickens to the local grocery stores and the community to raise the money to buy the next batch of chicks.

We knew education needed to continue in spite of COVID-19, so since March 2020, we have been delivering lessons to our students using bike taxis. Since our school is located in a rural area, many students do not have access to the internet, so online lessons were not an option.

Our students, teachers, and grounds people have spent many hours toiling in our school garden, where we not only grow plants but also crops that we cook and eat, such as callaloo. Our hard work has continually paid off, as not only have we been reaping a steady harvest of vegetables, but we have also won several awards for our garden as well, including the top school garden in Westmoreland in 2018, and the top school garden in Jamaica in 2019.
